Pierce celebrated Earth Day with multi-aged activities that focused on water and how to treat the resource with respect. Children sculpted clay amphibians and learned about vernal pools. Very springtime.
Mr. Shultz, Pierce art teacher, gave the students an opportunity to use water creatively in a painting project.
Mrs. Germain discussed pollution and demonstrated what an oil spill would look like. The children came up with some different techniques and tried to remove the oil from the water in their tank.
Students heard the true story about a child in Africa, The Water Princess, and how water affects her daily life read by Ms. Sutton. After brainstorming ideaS about their own positive experiences with water, students worked on a project that will be displayed in the multi-purpose room.
Mrs. Parsons, Title 1 teacher, arranged for community readers to come to school to share books in the classrooms, capping a great Spirit Week here at Pierce.

While celebrating the harbinger of spring, Ms. Sutton's class did some investigation about the groundhog and discovered that it is one of the only true hibernators in New Hampshire. Not even the black bear is a true hibernator, but a snooze waker. As a snooze waker, the black bear occasionally wakes up to walk around its den or to feed its young. Groundhogs can actually slow down their body functions to truly sleep through the cold months. This year the groundhog did rouse himself long enough to not see his shadow, predicting an early spring for us all. Our RiverMead reading partners joined us for this special event too. They enjoyed enjoyed every minute.  After storytelling,  our RiverMead reading partners had refreshments and read with students. This day was meaningful to all involved. Inspired by Michael Daley, one of our first grade readers was brave enough to read a story to her entire class taking huge step toward reading independence!  A proud moment! Then Jason Powers dressed in the uniform, bottom to top, to show the children that underneath the fire suit and mask there is a friend who will help them. Through the remainder of the day, each class went to the Fire Station for safety demonstrations in the fire trailer, and took part in a mock emergency.
