Forrest was part of a group of educators and aid volunteers with the group Good Soil Partners who worked in the village of Kangoma. She met with teachers and students and taught lessons at the pre-school and primary school levels. Most Malawi students learn Chichewa as their native language but start to learn English in primary school. While primary education in Malawi is free, students are required to purchase their own school uniform, pens, and notebooks. The average student-teacher ratio is 69:1 and the completion rate of primary education is 74%. Part of the presentation to students at Pierce School was also devoted to Forrest sharing her pictures from a safari that she took at the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, following her work in Malawi. There were photos of elephants, water buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, lions, and a leopard. "The presentation was wonderful," Ms. Sutton said afterward. "My students will be making her a book today about the animals she saw on her safari. This was a great integrated learning project!" We met naturalist Susie Spikol of the Harris Center for Conservation Education. We collected data, used scientific tools including binoculars, and discussed thermals used by the hawks to help them fly long distances with minimal energy. Did you know that hawks can fly for many miles without flapping their wings? They are great at saving their energy! On our hawk watch we counted 47 Broad Winged Hawks, 14 Turkey Vultures and 1 Red Tailed Hawk. Other nature sightings included snakes, grasshoppers, a praying mantis and pickerel frogs! The day did not disappoint. We all enjoyed time together and loved the warm sunshine. This year, Mrs. MacGregor invited the talented Steve Blunt to join her during her visit to Pierce School for an hour of sing along songs and stories. Steve Blunt is an award-winning children's musician from New Hampshire. His repertoire includes songs and stories for all ages which are fun and educational. Along with songs of his own making, Steve’s shows feature traditional American and multicultural material. The halls rocked Monday with rousing renditions and laughter as the whole school joined in with Steve's songs and stories. Thank you Dodge Library for an afternoon of fun. For seven weeks we have the opportunity to have a hands on garden curriculum designed to excite and inspire a generation of enthusiastic young gardeners. Each week on Thursdays at Pierce School, Cornucopia Project educator Lauren Judd, and Master Gardener Volunteer Peggy Saunders, introduce the first grade students to the fundamentals of gardening: maintaining healthy soil for seeds and starts, caring for young plants, and of course, tasting all the delicious fresh fruits and vegetables that are produced in the school gardens at Pierce. Students have also been provided with their very own garden journal to record their observations. The gardens are maintained over the summer by parents, students and staff from Cornucopia. In the fall the students return as 2nd graders and finish the project with a culminating harvest feast. Then they put the beds to rest for the winter and the cycle starts all over again for the 1st grade in the spring. In class, the 3rd graders studied life cycles and adaptations of frogs and salamanders. On the first warm, rainy nights in April when the temperature reaches 42 degrees or higher, amphibians begin to move toward the exact vernal pool where they were born to lay their eggs. The first big night occurred on Wednesday, April 25. Students and parents gathered in Hancock with reflective vests, flashlights and rain gear to safely cross amphibians across busy roads. Students helped make identifications of each species and collected data. We are proud to report 151 amphibians were crossed! What a wonderful citizen science project to be a part of!
