We hope you have weathered this storm. We are ready to welcome students back to school tomorrow, March 17, 2023. We will have a two hour delay and will follow our usual schedule for a delay, with arrival between 10:20-10:40 AM.
Due to the continuing hazardous road conditions in many towns, there will be some significant changes to bus routes. In many cases, buses can only travel on main roads; therefore, families will need to transport their children to the identified bus pick-up/drop-off locations, which can be found below as well as on the Conval district website and social media sites. Any student who cannot be transported to school by families or to the designated bus pick-up/drop-off locations will be considered absent excused.

Pierce Fun Run & Walk: Come support the Pierce School PTO in raising funds towards a new playground. This race will feature a loop of about 3.5 miles. Refreshments and baked goods after the race. Register Today
In the fall, NHPBS came and filmed the 3rd grade class at Pierce and the work we are doing with the turtle hatchling program. The turtle “head starting” program is in collaboration with the Harris Center for Conservation Education and NH Fish Game. We are following Zoo New England’s protocols for caring for the turtles and all turtles that were harvested will be raised in our classroom and released in May. This is in collaboration with the Harris Center for Conservation Education as well as NH Fish and Game. In the past week, Susie Spikol, our Harris Center naturalist, has been approached by the NH Public Broadcasting’s TV show Windows to the Wildhttps://nhpbs.org/windows/.
We have heard back from the producer and below is the link and time you can see the episode online. The hatchling project has been so enriching for our class and school as a community. Our class is very fortunate to have so many people come together to bring these turtles to our classroom. It is a truly integrated learning experience that ranges from social emotional learning to math, reading, writing and science.
The story will air - Wednesday, March 16, 2022 7:30 pm on NHPBS. It’ll be online at NHPBS.ORG/WINDOWS at that time.
"Sometimes we meet teachers in the forest, or in the barn, or in the ocean- or right in our own house. Some of my teachers have had two legs while others have had four or even eight. But all have taught me something important about how to be a good creature in the world.” This is how local author Sy Montgomery starts her book How to Be A Good Creature, a children’s book that can teach us all many lessons including how to be patient, respectful and to show courage. We used this book as a guide during kindness week before vacation.
All students listened to the story and thought about an animal that they have connected with or reflected on how they are good creatures in the world. Every child created a watercolor page about their reflection. These pages were turned into a beautiful book with the help of Jeannie Connolly of the Arts Integration program. The book was then hand-delivered to Sy Montgomery and her dog Thurber in Hancock. She was so touched that she took time to answer questions from students through Zoom this week. This integrated project was a wonderful way for students to think about who their teachers might be and what they might be able to teach others. Kindness and Courage are certainly a few examples that all Pierce School students can share.

For many years the children at Pierce School have made the walk down the main street of Bennington, past 100 year old homes and the Country Store to the beautiful brick building on the corner. Passing through its copper doors into the GEP Dodge Library, the students in Ms. Cannon's Kindergarten are welcomed by Mrs. MacGregor, librarian, and right away they know that they are in for a treat, a special story read aloud, just for them. When the story ends, it is time to hunt for some real treasure, a new book, a favorite book, a great book to bring back to school to read and reread and enjoy until...one day Ms. Cannon announces..."Guess where we are going?"

Linda Tenney visits Pierce School and reads to all of the students to celebrate our "Read to Me Contract" goal. The goal was to have 80% of families commit to reading with their children at least twice a week.  82% of families signed up exceeding our goal. Thank you to parents and students!
We love having Mrs. Tenney visit.
She will be coming back in February to participate in Community of Readers initiative to take place on the Fridays before February and April vacation.
