That statistic is staggering, but even more staggering is how little we know and understand Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum condition” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees” (What is Autism?, 2016). Autism Awareness Day is when we show our support of those who have autism by wearing blue. Joined by the international community, hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world, light blue in recognition of people living with autism. They explained that both legislators and New Hampshire citizens can come up with a good idea for a law. They explained the process of how that idea becomes a bill and does not become a law until it travels through the appropriate committees in the House and Senate to gain support. If the House of Representatives vote favorably for the bill they will send it on to the Senate for a vote. If the bill gets a majority of votes in both houses, the governor will have the final say to pass the bill into law or veto it.One fourth grader commented, "It takes a really long for a bill to become a law!"References

The Grange was founded during the Civil War era and has largely persisted in supporting agricultural endeavors over the years. In fact the word “grange” is a reference to grain, a very important farm product. In more recent times, the Grange’s initiative to put dictionaries in the hands of students has encouraged and supported literacy for all. Ms Sutton’s students explored their very own dictionaries finding out that there is so much more within its covers than they might expect. Pierce School 3rd graders are both appreciative to the Grange and delighted with their dictionaries. The smiling faces tell it all. This year 31 Pierce School students participated in the after school ski program. It was the perfect season filled with lots of snow, great temperatures and of course cherished time with friends. For some, this was their first year learning to ski or board. Bella in third grade said, “Everyone is friendly at the mountain and I learned a lot.” Olivia just finished her third year of lessons and said, “It is really fun to ski because you can get to different ski levels. I can ski the light blue trails now“. Watching students shine outside of the classroom and have the courage to try something new could not be more rewarding. Friendships were made and participants learned to trust each other. The after school ski program is a PTO sponsored event and would not be possible without the dedication, help and support of PTO President Theresa Healey, the teachers and parents who help each week. If you would like your child to be part of the after school ski program, please contact Theresa Healey or Ms. Sutton for more information. Online registration for next season will begin in September for the 2018-2019 program. Partial scholarships are often available. If it is going to be cold and snowy, we might as well enjoy it! The ceremony began with the torch being passed through the classes by the classroom teachers and carried by Mrs. Syre-Hager to the multipurpose room. Each classroom brought a colored ring to the multipurpose room to bind together to make our Pawlympic rings. Kindergarten chose yellow, first grade chose blue, second grade chose black, third grade chose red, and fourth grade chose green. Binding these rings together represents the whole school coming together to take part in this special 2 week event. Mrs. Syre-Hager lit the cauldron. We have special Pawlympic bear paws to mark this special event and a running score will be kept on Mrs. D’s bulletin board for the classes to compete in. At the kick off, kindergarten discussed what color each class would have, second grade discussed Kindness as it ties into the Olympics, and fourth grade discussed some of their favorite winter sports.
